Federal revenue rose 9.8%. What does that tell us?

Revenue reached $132.6 billion from April to June 2026. A stronger quarter does not mean the government finished the year in surplus.

The short version

The Fiscal Monitor reports $132.6 billion in federal revenue for April–June 2026, up $11.8 billion from a year earlier. The three-month budgetary deficit was $0.4 billion, compared with $6.3 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

Why it matters

Higher personal income tax, corporate income tax and GST revenue helped the result. Revenue is money coming in; the budget balance also accounts for spending. A revenue increase alone does not establish a surplus.

Keep the comparison fair

These are federal figures for three months of a fiscal year—not annual revenue for every Canadian government. They should not be compared directly with the calendar-year counter. Monthly results also vary with payment timing.
